When a child is born, a sperm from the father and an egg from the mother join together. The female egg contains special packets of DNA (mitochondrial DNA). The child, if it is born female and one day bears children, she will pass on the exact same mitochondrial DNA onto her own children. And so, over thousands of generations the mitochondrial DNA is passed down the female family line. Men and woman both can be tested for their Mother’s genetic line.
